Distinguished and Famous people from Stawell

🎭 Stella Young

Stella Young was born in Stawell in 1982 and grew up to become a comedian, writer and forceful disability rights advocate. She edited the ABC's Ramp Up website and used performance and journalism to challenge low expectations of disabled people. Her work with the LiveAccess Project pushed for better access to live music venues, bringing the argument into places where people wanted to spend an evening, not just into policy documents. A bronze statue unveiled at Cato Park in 2023 remembers her in her hometown. Young's sharp humour and insistence on ordinary adult dignity remain central to that legacy.

🏏 Chuck Fleetwood-Smith

Leslie Fleetwood-Smith, widely known as Chuck, was born at Stawell in 1908 into a family deeply involved with the local newspaper. He attended Stawell Primary School and later returned to play for the town's cricket club, where his bowling attracted attention from Melbourne. An extraordinarily gifted left-arm spinner, he played ten Tests for Australia and took ten wickets against England at Adelaide in 1937. His less conventional habits included bird-call imitations while fielding and strengthening his bowling hand by squeezing a squash ball. The local cricketer's story contains both remarkable skill and an unpredictability that could delight spectators while testing captains.

🛒 Frederick “Fred” Cato

Frederick “Fred” Cato was born at Stawell in 1858, in a tent on the Victorian goldfields. His first career was teaching, but a shop partnership developed into the Moran and Cato chain. Buying in quantity helped the business compete on price, and Cato also led the Rosella food-preserving company. His approach to staff included profit-sharing bonuses, sporting activities and annual picnics for workers and families. He supported a shorter working week by giving employees Wednesday afternoons off. Charity and Methodist church work were important parts of his public life. The grocery empire had grown from an unusually varied beginning: goldfields childhood, classroom and then shop counter.
